ATP and WTA both negatively reacted to Wimbledon’s ban of Russian and Belarusian players from the event

The decision by Wimbledon organisers to close the event for the Russian and Belarusian players because of the military aggression of both countries against Ukraine wasn’t praised by both ATP and WTA officials.

In the official statement, ATP insisted on the border between sport and politics, which should be ruined by tournaments organisers from London. The organisation reminded that the participants for Wimbledon are chosen via the ATP rankings, and the precedent can be rather provoking for the sport.

WTA’s officials didn’t also stay aside and condemned the decision by Wimbledon. The organisation also insists on the arguments of the sports when choosing participants for the event and excludes political ones.

At the same time, the only step that both associations made to influence the situation in Ukraine and stop the war was to forbid flags for the athletes from Belarus and Russia. Neither ATP nor WTA didn’t ask players from those countries to come up with official statements concerning the military aggression. The associations also ignore the sponsorship channels Belarusian and Russian players use for participation in the tournaments and countries praising in such a manner.
